The Montclair Music Studio is proud to introduce veteran guitar David Candido.
Mr. Candido, who has recently rejoined our staff, began teaching with us in 1985.
Dave resides in Montclair and has been studying the guitar for over 40 years. He combines traditional methods of note reading and theory with practical, hands-on examples. Mr. Candido believes that the student will learn how to play songs in the style they like, by the artists they like, while, at the same time learning the theory behind the songs. Dave also focuses on the more creative sides of music such as improvisation and songwriting.
Getting to Know David…
What brought on your interest in music?
As a child I was enthralled by the power music had to lift my spirits and elevate my soul. I listened to music both in church and on the radio, but it was always something of a mystery to me, because my family was not musical. One day, when I was in the 4th grade, a local rock band came to my school and played hits from the 50’s and 60s…this was around 1973 – I locked on to both the drummer and the guitar player and I was hooked! I began taking drum lessons, but soon switched to guitar. Making music has been an obsession ever since.
When did you start your studies?
I began taking drum lessons at the age of 7 and switched to guitar when I was 10 or 11. My father was tired of hearing me pound away on the drums in the basement and thought that guitar would be quieter. He clearly didn’t know how loud a guitar amplifier could be (lol). I studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston for 2 years and finished up my degree at William Paterson University in Wayne. I have studied and continue to play all styles of music, including classical, jazz and rock ‘n roll.
Was your family involved in music?
No, I am the first member of my family to pursue music seriously.
Have You Participated in Any Extra Curricular Organizations or music clubs?
Yes, I was the music teacher/director at Good Shepherd Academy in Irvington, NJ from 2006-2014.
What are other types of instruments in your repertoire?
In addition to the guitar I play the bass, ukulele, drums, and piano.
Have you played at other venues?
I perform regularly on Sundays in Watchung Plaza and I am available both as a solo guitarist and as part of a duo to perform at social events of all kinds.
Any favorite hobbies other than music?
I drive an ambulance several nights a week and enjoy playing baseball, basketball and tennis.
