Alex Mendelson

The Montclair Music Studio is proud to introduce veteran guitar Alex Mendelson.

Mr. Mendelson, who has recently joined our staff, has been a guitar instructor for over 4 years. He is a graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in Music & Technology with a minor in Literature.

Alex resides in Weehawkin and has been studying the guitar for over 16 years. He believes in finding what excites a student musically so that they are motivated to practice more. He likes to find ways to engage with songs they already like, and breaking those down into easy and fun practice modules. This makes playing the instrument fun, while at the same time building the student’s knowledge and skill.

Getting to Know Alex…

What brought on your interest in music?

Ever since I was a child my parents brought me to a variety of music performances. Some of my earliest memories are attending rock and jazz shows with my family. Along with listening to tapes and CD’s, I also loved the world of video game music which expanded my tastes to include electronic and ambient music. Music always felt like the most compelling part of life to me, like a type of magic.

When did you start your studies?

I began studying music when I played saxophone and piano in 4th grade, but when I discovered guitar at around age 11 is when I really dove in.

Was your family involved in music?

While neither of my parents are musicians, both are avid music fans who nurtured my passion for music through concerts, music education and media.

Have You Participated in Any Extra Curricular Organizations or music clubs?

I’ve been in probably 10 or so bands over my career as a musician. Additionally, I participated in the radio station at my college and helped with recording sessions at the school.

What are other types of instruments in your repertoire?

My repertoire of instruments also includes drums, bass, fundamentals on piano, and expertise in recording software and production in Logic Pro X. I also am a songwriter and sometimes sing for recordings and backups in my band.

Have you played at other venues?

I’ve played many venues around the Tri-State area including Chelsea Music Hall, Wonder Bar in Asbury, The Bitter End, The Broadway in Brooklyn, and many others.

Any favorite hobbies other than music?

I love hiking and nature walking. I also really enjoy drawing and listening to audiobooks.
