The Montclair Music Studio is proud to introduce guitar & ukulele instructor Calyx Ryu.

Calyx is an accomplished singer and guitarist and has performed as a “pit musician” for many musicals, including Rent and Jersey Boys. She also writes and records original music and has played in many venues in NY and NJ.

Getting to Know Calyx…

What brought on your interest in music?

Growing up, Hannah Montana was my favorite TV show and I wanted to be a rockstar just like her. That led me to start singing and I never stopped.

When did you start your studies?

I started studying guitar seriously during my junior year of high school, but have been playing consistently since middle school.

Was your family involved in music?

My grandpa is the only other musician in my family. He is a hobbyist woodwinds tech and loves to fix up old instruments for fun.

Have You Participated in Any Extra Curricular Organizations or music clubs?

Yes! I had been in choir from the 4th grade all the way until I graduated high school, I also participated in marching band, orchestra and theatre.

What are other types of instruments in your repertoire?

Mostly other stringed instruments, like the ukulele and bass. I just started playing the mandolin and I love it!

Have you played at other venues?

I’ve been playing in indie bands for the last two years, and I’ve played at The Stone Pony, Bowery Electric, Crossroads, Dingbatz, Debonair Music Hall, and more.

Any favorite hobbies other than music?

I love doing arts and crafts projects in my free time, particularly scrapbooking, calligraphy and watercolor.
