Getting to Know Gaye

What Brought on Your Interest in Music?
As a child, my older sister would always be listening to the radio and I would hear songs by The Beatles, The Jackson Five, The Supremes, Chicago and The Beach Boys.  I would pretend to have a guitar in my hand and to play and sing along.

Did you play as a child? If so, what instruments did  you play?
In 4th grade, I asked my mom if I could take guitar lessons.  I was lucky enough to start lessons and the rest is history!  My lessons opened up a whole new world for me.  I started to hear the other instruments in the songs and loved hearing the harmonies and background vocals of the singers.  Guitar was not considered a band or orchestra instrument in schools but I was able to perform in some small ensembles.  I felt very proud to play guitar because there were not many girl guitarists at the time.

Was your family involved in music?
My mom was always singing around the house and had a natural ability to harmonize.  Music was always played at family parties with everyone singing along.  The radio was always on in the car or house.  My friends across the street and I would get together to sing with me accompanying them on guitar.

Have you participated in any extra curricular organizations or music clubs?
By junior high school I was playing along with several groups at my school and performing in talent shows.  There were no jazz bands or guitar, bass or piano student bands yet.  However, I did then start taking classical guitar lessons to pursue a degree in music education.

What other types of instruments are in your repertoire?
The second instrument to which I was introduced was piano in high school.  As a music education major at Montclair State, I learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet, violin, viola, cello and all the percussion instruments.  I then continued learning piano along with classical guitar.

Have you played at other venues?
With my B.A. degree attained from MSU in 1983, I taught privately and held classical recitals and rock concerts yearly for my students.  I taught at St. Thomas the Apostle School in Bloomfield and organized elaborate shows from grades K-8 which also included dance performances twice a year.  With my own business, “The Miller Highlights”, I orchestrated all the instrumental parts for my students to perform at nursing homes and special needs schools twice a year.  I feel that if one has the gift of music, he or she should share it with others.

Any favorite hobbies other than music?
I love to travel and visit historic places as well as going to amusement parks.
On a ‘side note”, I have a non-verbal, autistic son for whom I advocate every day.
