Getting to Know Jonathan…
What Brought on Your Interest in Music? As music has been in my family, I was influenced by the fact that it was always around my household. I’m thankful that I was encouraged by family members to play.
Did you play as a child? If so, what instruments did you play?
I started playing the piano in 1st grade and I have been studying piano since. In middle school I joined choir and started to learn the alto saxophone in the school’s concert band.
Was your family involved in music? Music runs in my family. When I was younger, I would watch my mom play the piano and my dad play the guitar. Much of my family, including my grandma and my aunts, also played the piano. My mom signed me up for piano lessons and it started out as just something I could put on my college applications. I later decided to pursue music as a career when I entered high school.
What other instruments are in your repertoire? While I do not teach these, I have studied the saxophone as well as voice for a few years before entering college. I also took one semester of voice lessons at NYU where I had private lessons studying musical theater repertoire.
Have You Played at Other Venues? There were many performances I played while I was in high school. I was able to perform at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and at Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Music Center where I performed with orchestra. Other than that, I attended various music festivals, such as the Chamber Music Institute at the College of the Holy Cross, Music Fest Perugia held in Perugia, Italy, where I was able to perform with orchestra, and the Puerto Piano Music Festival, where I was able to perform at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. Of course, I have also performed at various venues around NYU.
What are Your Favorite Hobbies Other than Music? While still music related, I have started songwriting this past year and even started taking a beginner’s songwriting class which I am really excited about. Other than music, I love to play video games! Some of my favorite games right now are Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Overwatch, and Among Us. It’s my absolute favorite pastime other than the piano!
