Getting to Know Sara…

What Brought on Your Interest in Music?

My family inherited a piano from my great aunt when I was very young and I immediately wanted to know everything about it. From learning to read music to playing my first sonata I really loved the outlet that music provided me. Music not only grounded me but provided an escape and took me on a wonderful adventure.
I also grew up with two older brothers who played and loved jammin’.

When did you start your studies?

I began taking music lessons on the piano when I was 8.

Was your family involved in music?

My family shares my love for music in their own unique ways. My mother always loved the piano and shared that passion with me by being my first piano teacher. My brother took up the alto saxophone in middle school and high school and served as my own inspiration to pick it up myself. As a teenager my father played the guitar in a band with his friends called “Frankie Salad and the Four Seasonings”.

Have you participated in any extra curricular organizations or music clubs?

In high school I was a part of the Tri- M music honor society, the All City High School Orchestra in NYC and the Summer Arts Institute Program at Frank Sinatra High School.
At Montclair State I’m a proud member of a music fraternity; Sigma Alpha Lota and the African Drumming Ensemble. I’m also an alumnus of MSU’s symphonic band, Balkan Ensemble and Bassoon Ensemble.

What other instruments are in your repertoire?

I enjoy playing ukulele and guitar as well as almost all woodwinds and piano.

Have You Played at Other Venues?

I’ve played in the Golden Festival at Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn, the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, NYU, and Carnegie Hall.

What are Your Favorite Hobbies Other than Music?

I Love to paint, cook and bake, Bike Ride and Play Board Games with my Friends.
